He volunteered and served as a private with the Hampshire regiment in Salonika until the war ended. Sadly, he never completed his apprenticeship, so was never made a freeman of the city.
His two brothers also served in the army, one being a serving soldier when war broke out. Likewise the two older brothers of Arthur's wife, who were also born in Coventry to a Coventry family, served in the army at this time.
All five survived the war with just one being injured, which must have been something of a record, considering the carnage of those four years.
